INFORMATION: DISCOVERING ROOTS

"Discovering Roots" can help you visit Poland, find your ancestral towns, research your roots and imagine how your ancestors lived here in the old days that are gone, although the traces are still easy to find!

"Discovering Roots" was started in November 1997 as a group of young people from Poznan who took part in a city tour guide course. Lukasz was then a hobby genealogist who created one of the first internet guides on Polish genealogy (now under http://donhoward.net/genpoland ). Kasia was a student of tourism, and an architecture hobbyist. Magda was a student of the English language and literature and a professional photographer. A few other persons, our friends and relatives who shared our interests have also contributed to Discovering Roots over the past decade.

Our initiative was prompted not only by our personal hobbies but also by some of our foreign friends seeking advice on the internet while discovering their family history which started here in Poland. Actually, after the collapse of the Communist regime, many people all over the world are now able to research their Polish/German/Jewish roots in Poland and also to visit the country of the ancestors. It is also true, however, that due to the language barrier and complicated history of Poland, it is not always easy to find and understand the records and other sources you need to research your family history without an assistance from "locals" who have the necessary "know-how".

As young people with good historical background (we are now all licensed tour guides) and increasing genealogical skills, who also speak fluent English and German, we have been able to host many foreign guests (usually families or small groups) discovering the present Poland and the past of their ancestors. We have helped many others solve the mysteries of their heritage over the internet correspondence, of course supported by our research in archives! The province we are most familiar with is Greater Poland (Wielkopolska), the region surrounding the city of Poznan (also known under its German name Posen), but we are also ready to show you every other part of our country or to research there.

How to contact us
If you want to have one of us help you in your upcoming trip to Poland or in researching your roots, or just have questions regarding our services, please send us an e-mail. One of us will respond as soon as possible. Please note that during the roots trips or visits in remote archives, and especially in the summer season it's often difficult to read & respond to e-mail. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the delayed responses from our side due to that problem. Also, we kindly ask you to reserve the guide and arrange the details of your trip in advance, in order to avoid possible difficulties just before your departure.

If you have already corresponded with us and would like to renew the contact, you may prefer to write directly to Kasia, Magda, or Lukasz.
